Doctorate Title: Improving the utilisation of paramedics in the primary-emergency sector intersection to meet contemporary community healthcare demands.

Doctorate Description: Non-emergency ambulance transfers to Emergency Departments are estimated to have cost hospitals approximately $1.45 billion in 2020, a figure that is potentially reducible if these patients are referred to primary care instead of emergency care services. This PhD project will perform a cost-effectiveness analysis combined with a soft systems theory approach to practically evaluate the potential of ‘low acuity’ paramedic roles – including paramedic practitioners, community paramedics, and extended care paramedics – to assist in bridging the gap between current community healthcare needs and the existing paramedic models in the primary-emergency sectors.
