Doctorate Title: Exploring contextual and situational manifestations of children’s acute pain behaviours in the pre-hospital setting.

Doctorate Description: What role does contextual and situational anxiety sensitivity play in mediating children’s acute pain scores in the pre-hospital setting? A study will be undertaken within an NHS ambulance service to investigate if children’s pain reports are, in part, as a consequence of maladaptive cognitive processing. It is hypothesised that heightened contextual/situational anxiety sensitivity (AS), may amplify pain intensity through maladaptive processing within the brain-pain matrix in some children. The primary aim of this research is to explore children’s and young people’s contextual and situational experiences of acute pain outside of hospital. The secondary aim of this research is to determine if there is a correlation between anxiety sensitivity and child reports of acute pain intensity in the pre-hospital setting.
