Doctorate Title: Exploring the factors influencing the learning experiences of student paramedics in developing clinical skills for assessing patients of all skin tones equally.

Doctorate Description: Clinical assessment has been traditionally taught from a light skin tone bias, where techniques to identify clinical deterioration in patients of a dark skin tone have not been routinely proffered. This lack of knowledge delays treatment and impacts the outcomes poorly for patients with a dark skin tone. Updated national ambulance guidelines describe using new inclusive assessment techniques, but clinical practice may not sufficiently reflect these changes to support student paramedic learning. Theory teaching in higher education institutes may apply overarching principles of equality, diversity and inclusion to learners, but lack specificity in training the skills required to assess all skin tones equally.

This mixed-methods research will explore the barriers and facilitators to the learning experiences of student paramedics, with the purpose of improving parity of assessment in dark skin tones for equality and patient safety reasons (see Twitter: #TheSkinnyaboutSkin).
