Doctorate Title: Current and future requirements for gatekeeping in the prehospital setting with special consideration of sociodemographic requirements, with a special focus on two rural border regions in the Austrian state of Burgenland.

Doctorate Description: As a facility that can be reached around the clock, the rescue service is increasingly confronted with the tasks of non-urgent "simple" social, nursing and medical primary care. In addition, demographic shifts, especially in rural regions, have an impact on the number of deployments. In view of this, so-called gatekeeping for these "acute cases", i.e. a targeted initial assessment and allocation of the correct aid, will be decisive in the future.
The work examines the question of how its structures should look to ensure supply. Using two rural regions, the effects of demographic changes on the number of rescue services are investigated. Models of international patient management by control centers or on-site rescue workers through treatment, transport or referral to suitable resources are compared. Seven standardized case studies show the different reaction patterns of 25 rescue services from 17 European nations and the USA. Possibilities for the adaptation of deployment and disposition strategies and considerations on forms of networking between the institutions, the nursing and social facilities are presented.
