Doctorate Title: Impact of diversity and professional training on cultural competency in paramedics.
Doctorate Description: Cultural competency is the ability to understand and appreciate the cultural beliefs, attitudes, values, and practices of people that differ from one’s own, and be able to interact with them. Cultural competency has become recognised as a necessary component of clinical care. Paramedics frequently work with a wide diversity of patients in complex, uncontrolled and high-pressure situations. We propose that cultural competency is an essential element of paramedic care. This can also be observed in the various cultural competency and diversity training present in healthcare both pre and post qualification. The Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) data shows that the ambulance service across England is not as diverse as the wider NHS. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship and impact of diversity and professional training on cultural competency in paramedics.
