Doctorate Title: The Pathway to the Emergency Department: A national mixed methods study of Paramedics’ experiences and training needs when responding to people with self-harm and suicidal behaviour.
Doctorate Description: Over half of those who present to the ED with self-harm or suicidal behaviour do so via ambulance. Ambulance personnel are often the first healthcare professional the person comes in to contact with and their early interactions can have a significant impact on a person’s intent to stay for treatment, their engagement with treatment and their future help-seeking intentions.

This is the first national study of ambulance personnel identifying their experiences of responding to someone with self-harm/suicidal behaviour, and their education and training needs.

This on-going 3-phase programme of research is a multiphase mixed methods study focusing on the Emergency Department as a key location for mental health promotion and suicide prevention.

The findings from this programme of research have already been utilised to inform practice and will continue to have a direct impact on mental healthcare provision.
