Doctorate Title: Posttraumatic stress, posttraumatic growth, and resilience of Australian paramedics: Mixed methods research.
Doctorate Description: Working in a largely uncontrolled and under-supported environment, paramedics are subject to a unique combination of workplace stressors, including exposure to potentially traumatic events. As a result, paramedics are known to have elevated rates of negative psychological outcomes, including posttraumatic stress symptoms. However, they can also experience positive outcomes such as posttraumatic growth and resilience. The aims of this mixed methods research were to investigate the relationships between Australian paramedics’ stressor exposure, resilience, posttraumatic stress, and posttraumatic growth, and explore paramedics’ experiences of these phenomena. To meet these aims an explanatory sequential mixed methods design is being conducted. When completed, this research will provide a comprehensive report of the stressor exposure, resilience, posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth of Australian paramedics.
